STYLEWARS CROWNS CANADIAN MARK MC MORRIS AS NEW STAIRMASTER 2010

Presented by Corona, Red Bull, Skullcandy and Falls Creek Resort.

Mark McMorris has just been crowned the new 2010 Stairmaster, stealing the title from Sebastien Toutant in Stylewars’ notoriously action packed 28 Stairs rail jam event.

McMorris’ win has now made it two years in a row that a 16-year old Canadian has claimed the much-coveted title. TTR Head Judges Mel Simmons and Tim Shaw both agreed that the competition was tough. As expected, Seb Toots even bettered his exceptional 2009 performance, and thanks to an increasingly international Stylewars line-up, there was plenty of dangerous competition in sight. Stand-out riders included the Flow team from USA, Jeremy Thompson and Ian Thorley, Matts Kulisek and current TTR World Number One, Gjermund Braaten.

However, it was Mc Morris who stole the crown based on the consistency of his overall performance across all three rails. McMorris, originally from Saskatchewan in Canada, has exploded onto the international snowboard scene; earlier this year he won gold at the FIS snowboarding championships. Based on his new-found reputation and tonight’s performance, he has been quoted by the TTR Head Judges as "The Next Best Thing".

The Australian contingent of snowboarders put on proud display, with 17-year old Jye Kearney from NSW winning the title of best local rider. TTR judge Tim Shaw claims that Kearney’s performance really put Australia on the map for the event, and says he had a real chance of winning the Stairmaster title up against the teenage Canadian bombshells. Other stand-out local riders included Matt Sedundary, Andrew Roth, Jack Carlin and Timmy Laidlaw.

Due to another unlucky day of poor visibility, Stylewars’ regular slopestyle competition has been cancelled altogether. This serves as a huge disappointment to many of the riders who were super keen to hit up the world-class terrain park this year. Consequently, no Stylewars Grand Master has been crowned this year.

However, in light of the unfortunate conditions, the annual 28 Stairs event was hugely anticipated by all riders, staff and spectators on the mountain, attracting an astounding number of viewers who chose to brave the cold conditions. Snowfall has bucketed down across the mountain all day. In just 24 hours, Falls Creek has accumulated more than 50cm of snow, in what has been said to be one of the most incredible powder dumps in Australian history.

The exciting and action-packed 28 Stairs event has brought Stylewars 2010 to a close. Next year, Stylewars will celebrate it’s 10th-year anniversary. Let’s hope that in 2011, Mother Nature will shine on us to open Stylewars 2011 with only the best conditions that this event truly deserves.
