Looking at destinations for a snow trip this season we were instantly drawn to Mayrhofen due to the large contingent of UK riders there and in particular our Scottish buddies Jamie Trinder, Jesse Smith and Marc McClement who were out in Austria for the season.

So we waxed and packed and headed out for a 10 day adventure which will be hard to top. Unfortunately as we arrived Jamie was waiting on our plane to return back to Scotland for some R&R with a broken rib sustained at the Street v Snow event in Kaunertal a few weeks earlier. We knew Marc was also suffering with an ankle injury and may be a doubt for charging hard so when we found out Jesse was flying home 2 days later for a MRi scan on his knee we were left wondering how the fuck we would survive on only the shit chat between myself and Bow.
But the shred gods must have some love for MLP as it turned out the GB junior team were out for a 2 week training camp while we were there. Coaches Ben Kinnear and Neil McGrain had assembled a rad crew of the UK’s shred talent and were pushing hard in the park everyday. We jumped right onboard that train and hung with them for the best part of 10 days during what would turn out to be one of the best spells of weather this season has had.
Every day was wall to wall bluebird. Not a cloud in sight. Penken park was primed and the team were throwing down. Speaking to Ben he gave us an insight into how these camps are intended to go. Individually the aim is for each rider to improve their skill as the days continue. Each shred has a tailored plan according to their ability and works hard to achieve an end goal, progressing themselves to bigger tricks on bigger features.
With perfect weather everyday and a perfect park it did not take long before serious hammers were thrown.

Fin Bremner (14) has had and amazing season so far with solid results in high profile comps so far. He had been building up to a back 10 dub on the mahoosive 3rd kicker all week and took a couple of knocks along the way but the arrival in town of Jamie Nicholls visibly gave the whole team a boost and once he was in the park slaying it with them new levels were achieved in all of the Junior team. Pretty much the whole team stood on the 3rd knuckle when word came that Fin was going for his dub 10. Coming in hot Fin committed to the double and slightly overcooked to almost a 12. Some fine tuning from captain Kinnear on the chairlift saw Fin stomp the shit out of it on his next run. Everyone was super stoked for him knowing the effort he had put in. Fin now has back to back doubles which is in anyones view fuckin rad.

As much as the comp scene was never really our thing and regimented structure of training has never played a part in our snowboarding we can only admire the drive of both the riders and their coaches. Regardless we stuck to our own way of doing things in the park and planned our tricks at the lip. Some solid back 6’s to anal inspection on the medium jumps were achieved by myself and Bow and myself ate more Tacos on the rails than is advisable. All done with a massive smile all day and some 3rd degree sunburn from the blistering heat in the afternoon.

Once the team have done their training for the day it’s fun time for them in the park where they are let loose to explore and jib. Thats right up our street and with Nicholls, 100% out for a chill /no contest runs kinda break all hell was set upon those rails and stunt obstacles.

On this trip so many things aligned to make our time in Austria so good. The weather and park could not be beaten and there isn’t anywhere we would rather have been. I’ve been shredding for a while now and good times always have one consistent element which is essential in the pursuit for happy days.

The Crew. Always the Crew.

Thats is what makes a day out at Glencoe, thats what makes a trip to the dome worthwhile, thats why you spend your hard earned cash on flights and lift passes and that ,for me, is why I snowboard.

Hawk.
