Tom Burt’s interview was the first thing we ever shot for Powder and Rails four years ago. So why is it just airing now? Who knows. In the mid 80s, Tom, a self-proclaimed "old man," placed well in a few snowboard contests and decided to quit his day job as a math teacher and try to become a pro snowboarder. In the early years of professional snowboarding, Tom, along with Jim Zellers and Dave Hatchett, were the first snowboarders to hike and ride remote backcountry lines in Lake Tahoe. They were also some of the only snowboarders in the world to ever go to Alaska. Walking away from his teaching job worked out pretty well. Tom Burt was voted by a Snowboarder Magazine poll as one of the top 20 most influential snowboarders ever.
