数年前までは、ボードの真ん中が反りあがったボード、踏めばしっかりと返って来てカービングターンが可能なキャンバーボードしかなかったのに。今では、世の中に様々なボードが出ています。
そのキャンバー・ボードと対抗するような形で存在するのが、ボードの真ん中がお父さんのビール腹のように出ているロッカー・ボードではないでしょうか。逆エッジで引っかかり難いため初心者に適している。また雪上でクルクル回るグラトリが簡単。さらにはパウダーも滑りやすい！なんて言われていますね。だけど、実際のところどっちがいいのだろう？
その目安となるテスト動画が、カナダのウィスラーをホームに持つSnowboardProCampからアップされた。
テスト・ライダーとなったケビンが、５つの項目から両ボードをテストするという内容だ。
その５項目とは、①基本的なターン、②迂回コース、③カービングターン、④オーリー、⑤グラトリ
基本的なターンは、キャンバーの勝ち。ターンしていてエッジングが強くスピード・コントロールしやすい。
平らに近い迂回コースでは、ほぼ同じだけど、キャンバーの方がコントロールしやすい。
カービングターンでは、あきらかにキャンバーボードが良い。ロッカーでは、エッジングを保ち難い。
オーリーでの軍配もキャンバーボード。というのもキャンバーの方が、ポップしやすく、着地でも安定するからだそうだ。オーリーのようなことでは、ロッカーの方が良いイメージがあるけど、ケビンの評価はキャンバーに！
最後のテストは、ノーズやテールを使ったグラトリ。ロッカーの方がちょっとだけ、良かったそうです。
ということで、ケビンの評価は４対１でキャンバーが勝ち！
テスターのスノーボードのスタイルが変われば、違う結果が出るのだろうけど、一つの参考になるのでは？
In this video I test out the differences between traditional camber and rocker snowboards. The difference between camber and rocker snowboards is in the way that the snowboard is arched. The camber snowboard is arched so the center of the snowboard is raises off the snow, with the nose and tail touching. While a rocker snowboard is shaped more like a banana with the nose and tail arched away from the snow and the center of the snowboard touching. The five tests I put the snowboard through are basic turns, flat and narrow runs, carving, ollies and butters. It would be awesome to hear your feedback on the camber vs rocker snowboard test and what you think are the pros and cons between rocker and camber snowboards.
